A Small Thing To the Youth

Ms Phok Sreypich, the graduated student holding her Bachelor Degree of Accounting from National University of Management (NUM), having birth place in Kampong Thom Province and being the older sister of her three siblings in the family. She has been engaged in the social work under the group of Young Leader for Social Accountability (YLSA).

She was a volunteer training assistant about three months for the Youth Resource Development Program Organization (YRDP) while she was studying in the third year at her college. Most factors changed her life after she attended several workshops including Personal Development (PD) course, Interfaith and Active Non-Violence (IANV) and so on. She was interested in the ways of being in charge of facilitating skill, and methodologies for facilitating and organizing workshop events. These were the new things making her be involved with and made her critical thinking improved better. These were mostly important to provide her with good opportunity and real practical performances because they were the guidelines to prepare forums, events or ceremonies in either her workplace or family.

In addition, the facilitation, which she was trained, caused her to avoid any manner of happening arguments especially the facilitating skill brought her more new ideas and management system through participation to understand each other – mostly the new strangers whom she just met to start working with.

After she finished her voluntary work contract and improved to others, she was very interested in becoming a Core Group member in the project of Young Leader for Social Accountability (YLSA). She started to work in this group from January 2011 to September 2011. She actually loved the work in YLSA group because it consisted of its main goal to empower young people to become active citizens or agents for building a solidarity bridge to bring the community members and commune councils to reach each other together closely by promoting public consensus and local ownership of their issues and solutions.

In the exact field work, she co-organized with her group members to perform their social work with the community villagers in Pur Angkrang commune in Bor Seth district in Kampong Speu province. Her group members and her were working with 22 persons that was the project to be implementing. Her core group members were 20 volunteer youths who were volunteers from different universities in Phnom Penh. She was performing one project as the project facilitator and another project as the project assistant. She gave her words from her saying that this social knowledge was so different from what she studied at university. Studying at university, she just gained only theories but now she gained real knowledge in working with the community. She thought there were not many people knowing the social accountability meaning whether what did it do? How was so important to all? Why we have implemented it? These questions she felt doubtful before she attended in the project implementation.

Actually, she learnt much from the project such as Good Governance, Social Accountability, Commune Council Task Management System, Leadership, Democratic, Social Situation Analysis, Ways in Working with the Community Villagers, Team Building, the Process of facilitating and organizing workshops, forums or events. As one of the core group members, she has mostly learnt the ways to work in team work with new attitudes, facilitate and coach with the community villagers and core group members. Normally, she never thought that how hard had the team work done? How to understanding with each other? If there were any misunderstandings in the conceptual project, it would be the core group members having skills from colleges different from the project.

Moreover, she gained more clear understanding about how to mobilize the citizen to participate in her program activities especially she learnt the ways of the most villagers only expected to get materials or money from her core group when she, with her group members, was coming to join in the forums with them. She learnt the ways to share knowledge with the community villagers was the long lasting benefit better than giving materials or money. When the villagers gained enough knowledge they could raise their better lives by themselves. So these were the active challenges influencing to the results of the project. Just saying about working with group or standing in the crow of community people as a facilitator to share the knowledge related to the project, it was not so easy. Always open mind, aware of member work performances, encouragement, understanding the project concept and tolerating each other were mostly important.

Ms Sreypich, was so proud in the name of Cambodian youth, could contribute her time to build ability to help her society through YLSA project implementation. She was confident when she used her public speaking to facilitate workshops in the community. It was contrary from her past time that she could not raise any opinions even if in her family. Becoming new active youth, she was trusted and having good relationships with villagers in the community especially the key activists.

Having more chances to conduct her voluntary work in the society, she has been pushed by YRDP to read and research some guide books for improving her capacity in critical thinking skills by learning, analyzing and observing real recent social situations.

Finally, she was very thankful to her parents who look after her well with providing a warm heart and love to her, taught her how to be a good person in the family and society especially she thanked all relatives who encouraged her to do good things. Very unforgettable thank was YRDP who encouraged and provided her with a chance to learn and practice in the leadership and critical thinking skills. YRDP also encouraged all youths to overview their role in contributing for their society. She was excited and appreciated the social work given and organized by YRDP because she was much better aware of the ways to communicate with local authorities and villagers.
