MsNov Unheng, the second year student in majoring in Management of Business faculty of National University of Management, was borne in Sa’ang district, Kandal province. She has attended in the YRDP’s program activities since January 2011 and spent fifteen daysto join in a core course training of Personal Development (PD) whichheld by the Youth Capacity Development Unit (YCDU or TU) of YRDP.

In her past activities before attending in YRDP’s program activities, she was a person who did not like speaking or communicating with other people. She was unfriendly to others, not aware of news and volunteerism advantages and not evaluating the voluntary work. She did not manage neither take care of nor her time well, dared not speak in the public, not aware of what was a good governance, not understand about communities and NGOs especially the facilitating methods. Also, she was discriminating against types of friends and lacking of critical thinking skill.

“After attending in various program activities, I have found myself change many positive aspects including better quality of critical thinking skill, more preferable to readand listen to news, aware of advantages and disadvantages of news  especially I know how to well manage and save my personal time and advantages in communicating with people and being friendlier. In addition, I have been seemed to recognizethe waysto communicate with others are remarkably changed more interested in the social work. She continued “I remember the fact when my clubheld a field practice retreat to the province after finishing the course and that made me think I need to be a useful and potential person in my society. However, my mindwas insistently alerting myself how would I achieve this desire?”

She said after she came back from the field she gained a strong resolution, she decided to continue one more special course called “Young Leader for Social Accountability (YLSA)” to obtain more knowledge related to theneighboringenvironment situations. A fifteen-daycourse, not so long, was passed away quickly. Then she joined in the fieldpractice again toKampong Speu provincewhere she had ever been there one time with a team of the volunteered university students conducting a project called Young Leader for Social Accountability. “In the village, there were pathways, lakes, other constructing buildings and the living conditions of the people. This view, in fact, provoked me to ask myself what I could do to help them.By the end of the course, I was provided opportunity by the course coordinator of YRDPto work as a volunteer for YLSA. This opportunity has obviously provided me with many lessons learned such as ways of report writing, preparing administrative documents and communication, coordinating events, forums and workshops, making good relations with local villagers and authorities, core groupsand other group members as well. Particularly, I could have flexibility in communicating, understanding commune governance, and encouragingto share experiences with them,” she said.

Wearing her university uniform to seat reading in the chair with a greeting smile of her pride, she explained “thus studying at university, I just gain theories with less real practice especially social practicebecause I have gained a little knowledge of the society after I spent one year at university; in fact, job requirementsdemand high working experiences. However, it does not mean that my working experience is sufficient for my future career that means I need to improve my knowledge and experiences. Now I have been brave to speak in the public, on Radio and TV talk show. I was invited to be a speaker by Radio FM102 to share and discussion about the youth attendance in the society.”

Her knowledgeable message, she would like to express hergrateful thank to YRDP which has helped her build up her courage and other youths tobe aware of the volunteerismvalues. Thevolunteerism would be able to help them improve their braveness, absorb more social experiences, and be well-prepared for the upcoming ASEAN integration 2015.

The voluntary work is very beneficial for youths; however, many of other youths and herhave never understood about the volunteerism values unless they experienced themselves.“My idea has changed now because the voluntary work inspires me to be a valuable person in the society. It is very important to all of Cambodian youths,” she said.
