The Importance of My Voluntary Work

Mr. HE Hoky, a third year student in majoring in Hotel and Hospitality Management from Asia Euro University, was born in Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom Province. He has come to study at university in Phnom Penh since 2009. Recently, he is a voluntary assistant in Youth Empowerment Unit (YEU) of YRDP.

After participating and successfully accomplishing core courses of Personal Development and other specific courses of YRDP, he got much better improved himself adding more sharpened social skills to his university study. This brought him a good time to apply his achievements for volunteering in Volunteer Student Service (VSS) of the organization. According to the theories and directly precise practice in voluntary work, he gained much knowledge, experiences, learning lessons, methods to solve problems, communication, public speaking, relationship and self-confidence especially the social conscience building always motivated him to do social work in close collaboration on the culture of sharing because it made him have peace in mind. “If everyone has their own culture of sharing with others, the strongly sustainable peace extremely remains in mind, so their societies, countries and world will be never happened wars or any conflicts,” said Mr. Hoky, wearing white striped shirt and seating on his chair in front of a computer in the VSS room.

The voluntary work provided him with a great opportunity to improve his skills through participating in the trainings, workshops, forums, exchange programs and the other YRDP’s program. In addition, his voluntary work as assistant helped him sharpen experiences through assisting YEU staff in doing the budget preparations, clarifying budget, quotation arrangements, contacting the stakeholders and assisting the other work in progress. He has actively been organizing the training sessions, workshops and the other YEU programs by being in charge of contacting the participants, the organizing-event committees, advancing committee meetings to share the tasks to any of whom was to be responsible. Surprisingly, he was confident and a leading model to let his committee members start volunteer.

After assisting VSS, organizing many events, he has learnt how to work in groups, lead and work with different youths to achieve their expectations, manage and follow up the process, operate fast and effectively, notice each step of process, reflect and evaluate the committee work result and find good strategies to do in the future program activities. Those events, which he conducted, were youth forums, training, workshop, dialogue, culture day, international youth day forum, field trip research, youth club meetings and exchange program with YCC and others.

For another thing of his improving appreciation, it could help him practice his English to write and read document that was easy to connect with other youth networks in the real social situation. He could report writing, minute taking in English and read the several English documents. Nevertheless, he did not think about the social work importance and always wasting his precious time before he attended the YRDP’s program activities (VSS) especially his public speaking because he never used to be more bravely speak in the public. Now he changes his life. He knows the ways to speak in the public.

The voluntary work sharpened his skills and changes him to be more accountable in his obligations, be able to work in complicated situations of the teams, be a person with good communication with sharing more values to others. His new habits were always doing the reflection after one activity in order to review what he improved and what he still lacked of requiring more improvement and plans to do in the following activities.

To return to YRDP that change me throw volunteering, “I decide to continue to volunteer and try to involve in the social work because I could share what I have learnt from YRDP to share with my friends at the university and advice them to volunteer as I do. I will share my benefit of voluntary work to them”, added he looked at the sight painting on the wall in his VSS room.

He thought after 6-month volunteer at YRDP, he improved himself, gained more knowledge and experiences, changing his life of negative attitude. The meaningfulness of his voluntary work has made him prepare himself ready for his future plans. “Voluntary work both helps myself and help my society!” recommended by Mr. Hoky to inspire other youths to join in the socially voluntary work and use their time precisely and valuably.

Mr. Hoky was joining in the role play to exercise his youth function in exchanging with foreign youths to share experiences and knowledge, doing the group discussion during the exchange program period at YRDP. He also recorded to report for reflection in his group.

Altogether with foreign youths in program exchange attended by the active youths of YRDP including Mr. Hoky, one of the most active youth, learned much from this exchange event because he felt better than the past and got to know new friends from other countries.
