KOEUT Chantrea, freshman at Department of Media and Communication, Royal University of Phnom Penh. Nowadays, she was a volunteer student of Khmer Rouge Tribunal Project. Her story of change was very interesting and able to be a simple for other students as well. She said “I have attended in the workshop of Personal Development (PD) at Youth Resource Development Program (YRDP) since I was in grade eleven. You will astonish how I could involve here whether I was not a university student. It could not be suspicious due to my commitment making me possibly to join in this workshop. Attending in the Personal Development course at YRDP, I get more acquainted myself with improvement. I have become a good listener and communicator, known the ways to work in groups and had more things to develop my personal life. Then, I was advised to meet an agreement with Publication and Communication (PCU) of YRDP to voluntarily work for unit in three months of probation. I was working hard during my high school; however, I was disconnected from YRDP approximately for two years.”

On 1 to 7 February 2011, she attended in a workshop on “Khmer Rouge History and National Reconciliation.” According to this event happening, she was attached to attend in YRDP program activities again. She added “I have joint this program for seven days. During the workshop, YRDP let me and other students to visit some Khmer Rouge history places; such as conducting the study tour in Tuol Sleng prison or S21, Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and the field trip to Kompong Thom province.” Moreover, Ms Chantrea has successfully produced a documentary film titled “Oxcart during Pol Pot Regime” which was displaying in the Youth Public Forum on Life as a Young in Democratic Kampuchea, at CJCC on February 27, 2011. She continued “after the workshop was finished, YRDP supported me to make a documentary film related to Khmer Rouge, which was related to my major in media, so it strongly encourages me to produce the film in order to spread the information of Khmer Rouge History to people especially Cambodian youths. Anyway, it is quiet tough to produce a film because I am just in year one and I have not studied how to shoot and edit the video yet. What I can do in the film is what I was trying my best to learn from my seniors. Even I and my friends could not produce this film perfectly as the professional; however I do appreciate my achievements because it was my first production. If you want to see my documentary film, you access to YRDP or YouTube website and type the title.”

It was so amazing for a young Cambodian student like Chantrea interested in Khmer Rouge history. Not only a documentary film which she has successfully done, but it could also be an essay competition which she won among several students from other universities. She said “YRDP have a youth essay competition on National Reconciliation Process and Role of Youth in Psychological Reconciliation in Communities after Khmer Rouge Regime”. In the following, she decided to join the contests. She has presented her essay on May 29, 2011 and got number four among five candidates.

She articulated that she has been involved now in voluntary work in Khmer Rouge Tribunal Project at YRDP from June. She loved social work and wanted to know more about Khmer Rouge history and ECCC process, thus she consented to intern here. YRDP has provided her with ways of how to be successful in life, also she assisted other youths to join in any events at YRDP and in the society for better improvement.

Ms Keout Chantrea, during the public youth forum, spoke out her concerns related to Cambodian youths who would play an important model to take part in the country development.
